Today we begin a new blog in celebration of Emily now at home and growing up as member of our family.
As we completed our trip to China and back with Emily, and took a week or so to settle into home live, we felt it was time to leave our old blog http://emilycomeshome.blogspot.com/ to rest completed as of May 6, 2006 (one month after our departure date to China). We do this for two reasons: 1) to perserve our trip, and all the wonderful events and details, for others to access as they prepare their own journey to China to complete their adoption. 2) to make distinction between the events, pictures, and stories of our adoption journey and the new journey for Emily and us as a family living life together.
I plan to typically update this new blog once or twice a week with the latest news, photos, tid bits of humor, etc. as Emily progresses along
So with that said, let me start today's post by announcing that Emily has her very first tooth appearing now. We discovered it yesterday, which is no easy task given how often she has her little tongue sticking out in various gleeful expressions. We were so happy today to discover Emily's very first little enamel peeking through. [Doesn't take too much to get new parents going now does it?! :) ] Now, I figure it will be a while before I successfully get a photo of the little baby tooth, but you can rest assured, it is on my list of interesting photo ops now.
Emily seems to be growing and putting on weight nicely. the little tiny butt that was swamped by a size 3 huggie a month ago is actually filling in nicely and I expect we will indeed move her into size 3s within another month. Her appetite has expanded nicely in the last week, adding multi-grain cereal, baby apple, sweet potato, and even carrot to the daily diet. We have weaned her off of steamed egg and moved to a mixture of Similac and a firm egg yoke mixed together to form a paste, which see just loves to gobble down. We even are getting her to take some water by spoon at the end of a meal to help clean the palete and keep the gums and tooth cleaned. We have also successfully weaned her off of the earlier taste for salt she seemed to have. She will now eat foods with no salt added, and is enjoying more sweet foods as can be seen from the new menu above.
We don't want to add too many new foods at once so we can monitor for allergic reactions. So we are adding in 2-3 new foods per week to expand her tastes. We will see how this goes as we add in more variety over the coming weeks.
With the moderate increase in fiber with the diet changes, she is doing spendidly in poopage, so we also have weaned her off the little drops of honey (traditional Chinese remedy) we used to add to her milk to prevent constipation. Once we weaned her off of rice cereal, this went pretty quickly and effectively.
Tomorrow is Emily's first Dr appointment. She will meet her pediatrician for the first time, and receive a full physical evaluation. I'm sure there will be some intersting things to report on how the visit goes. It will be interesting to see how she gets along with the Dr and the nurses. Nancy has a niece in Hefei who is a nurse, and she was probably the only member of Nancy's family in Hefei that Emily did not warm up to. Must have been some nurses "vibe" :)
