Emily has officially become a cute little "rug-rat".She rolls, right, left, all around. She rotates around on her tummy so she can roll to her nearest target (usually a toy). She pushes up to extend her arms and then pushes backward along the floor. She will lean forward into a crawling position on all 4's to reach for an object. She rocks back and forth on her hands and knees. She will even scoot from place to place while sitting by rocking back and forth to chug along forward.
It is not unusual to see her roll and push herself all over the family room now, leaving a trail of toys along the way. We can put her toy box along one wall and she will pull toys out one at a time, play with them for a bit, then toss them. Then she will proceed to move around and play with whatever toy strikes her fancy at the moment. I have childproofed everything in the family room now, including setting up a baracade gate at the border to the kitchen to keep her "in-bounds" when the inevitable crawling begins.
It is interesting to see Emily go through day to day cycle changes in her preferences for diet and napping times. Some days she wants to eat and eat and eat, virtually anything we put in front of her. Other days she will firmly lock her mouth closed and pucker her little lips in refusal at food that just the day before she fussed and fussed to get more of. We are usually successful with 3 bottle feedings during the day (morning, lunch, and bed time) with cereal, baby food, egg yolk scattered in between. But she does have days when she is voracious, and other days when she is miss "picky". She has put weight on nicely over the last month and now weighs just over 18 lbs.
Some days she naps more then others. I have seen her take as little as three 3o minute naps during a particular day and just be on the go constantly til bed time. Other days, she will nap as much as 3-4 hours over 2-3 naps through the day. Happily, bed time always means a good nights sleep for Emily. She will sleep through the night and then wake as early as 6:00 AM, but more likely 7:00 AM. She always wakes up in a happy mood and is often talking up a storm (blaa blas this... and blaa blaa that) when we go to pick her up in her crib. No telling what angle or position she will be in her crib either. She sleeps every which way, and sometimes with foot out of her crib rail. She loves to snuggle up against the pads of her crib so it is not unusual to find her either at the head or foot of her crib snuggled into one of the corners.
With respect to toys, when we received Emily in China she liked toys that rattled or made noises of some sort but totally shunned soft stuffed toys of any kind. This has changed quite a bit now as she will play with a variety of soft toys as readily as some of her old favorite rattles and muscial toys. We keep a variety of different toys in a shallow toy box for her in the family room and let her pick and choose what she wants to play with. Emily, like many kids, has a fondness for wrappers and containers of course. This weeks favorite is the ever popular empty round oatmeal container. She still very much likes to study items with colorful pictures and text on them, so the more detail on the box or wrapper the better she seems to like it.
