But first, for my fans who prefer pictures rather stories, let's take a look at Emily and her new ability to hang her favorite bucket on her arm just like a purse!
The photo above is a self-taught behavior from last week. Shortly afterward, Emily then concluded that the bucket was also a good item to load stuff into and carry around (see photo below).
So the challenge is on mom now to find a little purse for my princess :) Mom pointed out that she already had a little lavender purse in her closet waiting for her, but dad gave that purse a thumbs-down as the straps are too short. Mom must now go on a search for a purse, with final approval by dad of course. :)
Back to the concept of beggin, err.. I mean talking for food, Emily loves to eat whatever we are eating, including spicy foods (Hunan girl all the way!!) and so when we are eating, she expects to be in her high chair or on one of our laps so she can get her fair share. Emily will say AhAh, or YumYum to us loudly and firmly to get her point across too. And when we give her something she particularly likes we are quick to receive a big beaming smile followed by an enthusiastic Mmmmmm, or Yuummm. The only food we have found that Emily does not particularly like is anything with a bitter taste to it. Other then that, it's all fair and up for grabs as far as Emily is concerned, and Korean Tofu Soup, or any similar spicy soup continues to be a favorite. We slowly experiment with how much of something spicy she can handle, and so far, she gobbles it down, and never any signs of distress (even the next day when the diaper fill comes, it's all smooth sailing).
In the growing vocabulary department....all I can say is wow! Emily now interchanges BahBah (Shanghainese), and BaBe (english), freely when describing herself. Same for BaBa, or DaDa for pointing out dad or trying to get dad's attention. She will say YeYe, but not grandpa yet though. When we load into the car in the morning, she will say YeYe, and continue to do so until we get to grandpa's house. Emily dearly loves her YeYe, and really is good at working him too :) To date, Emily has refused to say Grandma, or BooBoo (Shanghainese) and that just royally frustrates grandma....LOL. Emily recognizes and names each of the family members now in her little photo album.....well.. except for grandma, who she insists on calling whatever comest to her at the moment. Poor grandma. :) Emily also interacts intelligently and consistently now with the Teletubbies show, waving, saying byebye, laughing and giggling with the tubbies, etc. etc.
Since Emily has supervised free reign of our ground floor now, she is quite the handful to keep track of. She is very mobile on her feet now and can quickly exit the Kitchen around the corner and to the right and head for the living room, faster then I can keep track of her. She also prefers to trot instead of walk now, so the long hallway upstairs is definitely the space for her to giddy-up and go. Walking has pretty much taken over crawling too in that even in her play area (the whole freaking family room for the most part) she will get up and walk now to something close rather then just crawl to get it.
Emily has also started tossing things over the rail upstairs to tumble down into the family room, and thinks it is really funny, so we need to keep an eye on what she has available to toss. Soft toys = OK, anything that could be a big ouch on dads head = not OK. The one new thing Emily has taken too that I could do without is the idea of reaching into her toy box (right handed by the way, so it looks like she's gonna settle in as a "righty") and grabing an item and then giving it the big over the shoulder heave-ho. Stuff can fly all the way to my lap on the couch at times and I don't particularly admire the action too much :) Why we need to empty the whole toybox at the beginning of a new day before we play is also a concept that escapes me.
In the general noise category, we are now working with Emily on the concept of inside voice, with little success so far. But we shall prevail eventually. That said, Emily has a whole host of cute sounds she can make: clicking sounds with her tongue on her front teeth, she can make buzzing sounds with her lips and tongue and has learned also to go bleblebleble with her finger on her lips. Emily loves to laugh and her and dad have a routine where one laughs, then the other laughs, and then rinse and repeat louder and longer for several minutes at a time.
Emily really is a very good natured and fun loving baby. She has a great sense of humor, and learned sometime ago the concept of being teased, and teasing back. She loves to be teased, and will tease right back while laughing and giggling. Emily also shares well, and will give and take readily and in a friendly manner. We really really hope this trend holds, but we won't know that for sure until she is a year or two older I guess.
